What are Crooked Teeth?

Crooked teeth - also referred to as dental crowding is one of the most common dental concerns in Australia. It occurs when there isn't enough space in the jaw for teeth to grow in straight, causing them to overlap, twist, or push out of alignment. You might also hear it described as "wonky teeth".

While mildly crooked teeth are extremely common and often purely cosmetic, more pronounced crowding can affect your bite, make teeth harder to clean, and impact your confidence in your smile.

Types of Crooked Teeth

Rotated or Twisted Teeth

Individual teeth that have turned or twisted out of their natural position, often due to crowding pushing them sideways. This can make certain teeth appear crooked even when overall alignment is relatively normal.

Overlapping Teeth

Where one or more teeth sit in front of or behind neighbouring teeth rather than sitting side by side. Overlapping is particularly common with the upper front teeth and is a frequent reason people seek treatment.

What Causes Crooked Teeth?

Genetics

The size and shape of your jaw is largely inherited. If your parents had crooked or crowded teeth, there's a higher likelihood you will too - particularly if your jaw is too small to comfortably fit all your adult teeth.

Childhood Habits

Prolonged thumb sucking, dummy use, or tongue thrusting during childhood can gradually push developing teeth out of their natural position, leading to crowding or misalignment as adult teeth come through.

Early Loss of Baby Teeth

When baby teeth are lost too early (through decay or injury), neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap before the adult tooth emerges, leaving insufficient space and causing the new tooth to come through crooked.

Overcrowding as Adult Teeth Emerge

Many people have jaws that simply aren't large enough to accommodate a full set of adult teeth. As teeth compete for limited space, they push against each other and shift out of alignment - often most visibly in the lower front teeth.

Wisdom Teeth

Late-erupting wisdom teeth can place pressure on existing teeth as they push through, causing previously straight teeth to shift and crowd - particularly affecting the lower front teeth in adults.

Reasons for dental crowding treatment

Here's Why You Should Treat Crowding.

Harder to clean

Crooked and overlapping teeth create tight spaces that are difficult to brush and floss effectively. This allows plaque to build up in areas your toothbrush can't reach, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease over time.

Gum damage

In severe cases, lower teeth can bite into the upper gum line, causing irritation or recession.

Jaw pain & discomfort

Misaligned teeth can place uneven stress on the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. This can contribute to jaw pain, headaches, and in some cases TMJ disorders - particularly if the bite is also affected.

Gum disease risk

Crowded teeth are one of the leading contributors to gum disease in adults. When teeth overlap, gum tissue can become inflamed and difficult to keep clean - creating pockets where bacteria thrive.

Self-confidence

Crooked or wonky teeth are one of the most common reasons people feel self-conscious about their smile. Straightening your teeth can have a significant impact on confidence in social and professional situations.

Speech & function

Severely misaligned teeth can affect how certain sounds are produced and make biting or chewing less efficient - placing unnecessary strain on specific teeth and jaw muscles during everyday eating.
