What is an Overbite?

An overbite - sometimes called a "deep bite" is one of the most common dental misalignments in Australia. It occurs when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth more than they should. A small amount of overlap (around 2–3mm) is completely normal. When the overlap exceeds this, it's considered a malocclusion that may need attention.

Types of Overbite

Dental Overbite

Caused by the position of the teeth themselves — often due to habits. This is the most common type and is often treatable with clear aligners.

Skeletal Overbite

Caused by the position or size of the jaw bones rather than the teeth. Skeletal overbites are more complex and may require in-person treatment, however mild cases often benefit from aligners.

What causes an Overbite?

Genetics

Jaw shape and tooth size are largely hereditary. If one or both parents had an overbite, there is an increased likelihood of it developing in their children.

Childhood habits

Prolonged thumb sucking, dummy use beyond toddler years, or tongue thrusting can gradually push the teeth into an overbite position.

Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Chronic grinding can wear down the lower teeth, increasing the apparent vertical overlap of the upper teeth.

Missing lower teeth

When lower teeth are missing and not replaced, the upper teeth have less resistance and can drift forward over time.

Overcrowding

When there isn't enough space in the jaw, teeth can shift into positions that contribute to an overbite.

Reasons for overbite treatment

Here's why you should treat it.

Tooth wear

Excessive overlap causes abnormal contact and accelerated enamel wear on the lower front teeth.

Gum damage

In severe cases, lower teeth can bite into the upper gum line, causing irritation or recession.

Jaw pain & TMJ

A deep bite stresses the jaw joint, contributing to TMJ disorders, headaches, and facial tension.

Speech difficulties

Some overbites affect how certain sounds are produced, impacting confidence in social situations.

Self-confidence

A pronounced overbite can impact how people feel about their smile and overall facial appearance.

Long-term oral health

Misaligned teeth are harder to clean, increasing the risk of plaque buildup and gum disease.
