Nervous system
Breathing through the mouth involves shallow, quicker breaths, which can activate the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system. During sleep we're supposed to be in a relaxed, para-sympathetic state. Night time mouth-breathing leads to day time anxiety.
Sleep
By nasal breathing, a slow and deep breathing pattern is established which is important for the body to stay calm while it is trying to rest and recover. This slow breathing means air stays in the lungs for longer, and the body has more time to extract oxygen from that air.
Cognition
In the short term, a better night's sleep helps with concentration, memory and judgement. In the longer term, it can show in your work performance, prevent cognitive decline with age and alzheimers or dementia.
Mood & wellbeing
Improved sleep quality and oxygenation contribute to a more balanced neurotransmitter profile, promoting feelings of calmness and positivity. By encouraging a parasympathetic (rest and digest) instead of a sympathetic (fight or flight) state during sleep, mouth taping helps you to wake up feeling refreshed and emotionally resilient, leading to a brighter outlook on life.
Immunity
Preventing an open-mouth posture during sleep reduces exposure to airborne pathogens and bacteria. By promoting nasal breathing, mouth taping ensures that air is filtered, warmed, and humidified as it passes through the nasal passages, optimizing the body's defense mechanisms against harmful invaders.
Facial aesthetics
Mouth taping can have transformative effects on facial aesthetics and overall facial symmetry. By nasal breathing and encouraging the tongue to rest against the palate, the maxilla is given the support it needs to widen instead of narrow - the face grows up and forwards instead of down and backwards.
Common questions.
What if my nose becomes blocked during the night?
In a worst-case scenario where the nose becomes totally blocked, it has in-built alarm system that detects low oxygen levels and can wake you up instantly. Additionally, our cactus-silk fabric is breathable, allowing oxygen to pass through.
If nasal congestion persists, or is severe, do not use the tape and consider using saline spray or nasal strips to clear the blockage. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities.
What's so bad about mouth breathing?
Mouth breathing can lead to various health issues, including dry mouth, bad breath, dental problems, and disrupted sleep patterns. It bypasses the natural filtration and humidification process of the nose, increasing the risk of respiratory infections and reducing oxygen uptake efficiency. Mouth breathing contributes to snoring, sleep apnea, and overall poor sleep quality.
Will it stay on during the night?
The adhesive on our Night Tape ensures a night-long use, as long as the skin is rinsed and dry. Please do not use any moisturiser on the area before application of the Night Tape.
Will it irritate my skin?
Our tape is gentle and suitable for those with sensitive skin types. A slow removal in the morning is recommended.
I have lots of facial hair. Will it still work?
Yes, our tape is facial hair-friendly and can be used effectively even on those with beards & moustaches.
Will it hurt to remove it in the morning?
No, our tape is designed to be gentle on the skin and should not cause discomfort when removed in the morning. If it does, pull it off very slowly to ensure a comfortable removal.
Here's the science.

Effect of mouth taping on sleep and performance - Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences 2018
A study published in the Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences in 2018 examined the effects of mouth taping during sleep on sleep quality and cognitive performance. The researchers found that mouth taping improved sleep efficiency and reduced sleep-disordered breathing events, leading to enhanced cognitive performance the following day.
Nasal breathing and sleep architecture - Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine 2017
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2017 investigated the relationship between nasal breathing and sleep architecture. The study concluded that nasal breathing during sleep was associated with better sleep quality, including increased slow-wave sleep and REM sleep, compared to mouth breathing.
Impact of mouth breathing on sleep apnea - Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine 2009
A study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2009 explored the prevalence of mouth breathing and its association with obstructive sleep apnea. The findings revealed that mouth breathing during sleep was significantly correlated with the severity of sleep apnea, highlighting the importance of nasal breathing for sleep health.
