A crossbite is one of the more common bite issues that people seek treatment for, and it is one that clear aligners are well suited to address in many cases. Here is what a crossbite is, how aligners can help, and what determines whether your case is treatable with this approach.

What Is a Crossbite?

A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth rather than outside them. In a normal bite relationship, the upper teeth sit slightly outside the lower teeth all the way around the arch. When this relationship is reversed on one or more teeth, those teeth are said to be in crossbite.

Anterior vs Posterior Crossbite

Crossbites are classified by where they occur in the mouth. An anterior crossbite affects the front teeth, where one or more upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth when biting. A posterior crossbite affects the back teeth, where upper premolars or molars sit inside the corresponding lower teeth on one or both sides.

Single-tooth crossbites, where just one tooth is affected, are among the most straightforward cases to treat. Multi-tooth crossbites, or those involving broader arch width discrepancies, can be more complex.

Can Clear Aligners Fix a Crossbite?

Yes, in many cases. Clear aligners can move individual teeth or groups of teeth to correct the bite relationship. For anterior crossbites involving a small number of teeth, aligner treatment is often an excellent option. The tooth movements needed, typically tipping upper teeth forward and lower teeth back, are well within the capabilities of modern aligner technology.

Posterior crossbites may also be addressable with aligners, depending on the cause. If the crossbite is due to the position of individual teeth, aligners can often correct it. If the crossbite is due to a narrow upper arch that is structurally narrower than the lower arch, treatment may require arch expansion in addition to tooth movement, which aligners can facilitate in some cases or which may require additional appliances.

Why Crossbites Should Be Treated

A crossbite is more than an aesthetic concern. Teeth in crossbite can wear unevenly because they are not meeting the opposing teeth in the correct way. Jaw muscles and the temporomandibular joint can experience uneven stress as the jaw shifts to accommodate the irregular bite. Over time, untreated crossbites can contribute to jaw pain, asymmetric jaw development in younger patients, and significant wear to the tooth surfaces involved.

Treating a crossbite is about function and long-term dental health, not just appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can clear aligners fix a crossbite?

Yes, in many cases. Clear aligners are effective at correcting anterior crossbites and many posterior crossbites that are caused by the position of the teeth rather than by a significant structural difference in arch width. The Jawology team can assess your specific case and advise on suitability.

Is a crossbite serious?

Yes, crossbites should be treated. They cause uneven tooth wear, can create jaw muscle strain and joint issues, and in younger patients can affect jaw development. Correcting a crossbite protects both your teeth and your jaw health long-term.

What is the difference between a crossbite and an underbite?

An underbite is where the entire lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth. A crossbite is where specific teeth are on the wrong side of the bite relationship, either at the front or back of the mouth. They can sometimes occur together.

How long does crossbite correction with aligners take?

This depends on the severity and what other movements are needed as part of your overall treatment plan. Single-tooth anterior crossbites can sometimes be addressed relatively quickly. More complex cases involving multiple teeth or arch width differences take longer. Your treatment plan will include a timeline estimate.
