Can You Play a Musical Instrument with Clear Aligners?

If you play a musical instrument, particularly a wind or brass instrument, you may be wondering how clear aligner treatment will affect your playing. It is a reasonable concern. The short answer is that most musicians adapt successfully, but there is typically an adjustment period, and some instruments require more adaptation than others.

Wind Instruments

Woodwind instruments such as flute, clarinet, oboe, and saxophone require precise embouchure control, the positioning of your lips, mouth, and tongue. Adding an aligner to your mouth changes the internal space and the feel of your embouchure, particularly in the early weeks of treatment.

Most woodwind players notice a change in tone or control during the first one to two weeks of wearing aligners. With consistent practice, the majority of players adapt and return to their previous standard. The adjustment is real but temporary for most people.

The flute deserves a specific mention because it does not involve a mouthpiece against the teeth, but the lip position and airstream are still affected by anything that changes the internal mouth space. Flute players tend to adapt relatively quickly compared to reed instrument players.

Brass Instruments

Brass instruments such as trumpet, trombone, french horn, and tuba place the mouthpiece directly against the lips, which means the aligner has less direct interference with technique than with woodwind. However, the increased thickness of the aligner behind the lips can subtly affect pressure and embouchure feel.

Brass players generally adapt more quickly than woodwind players. Most report noticeable improvement within a few days to a week of consistent playing.

Other Instruments

For stringed instruments, keyboard instruments, and percussion, clear aligners have no practical effect on playing ability. These instruments do not involve the mouth in their technique, so there is nothing to adapt to.

Singers may notice a subtle change to vowel sounds and resonance, particularly in the first week or two. Like wind players, most singers adapt well with consistent vocal work.

The Adjustment Period

The adjustment period is generally most noticeable in the first one to three weeks of treatment, and again briefly each time a new tray is introduced. The new tray has a slightly different shape from the previous one, which can cause a brief reset of the adaptation.

If you have important performances coming up, discuss your treatment timeline with the Jawology clinical team. In some cases, it is possible to time tray changes around significant events so you are not adapting to a new tray during a performance period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will clear aligners affect my ability to play a wind instrument?

In the short term, yes. Clear aligners change the internal space of your mouth and affect embouchure feel. Most wind instrument players adapt within one to three weeks of consistent practice. The effect typically reduces with each new tray as adaptation becomes faster.

Should I remove my aligners to practice or perform?

This depends on how significantly the aligner is affecting your playing and how important the session is. Removing aligners temporarily to play is acceptable, but be mindful of wear time. Consistent removal for long practice sessions can reduce daily wear below the recommended 20 to 22 hours.

Do brass instrument players adapt faster than woodwind players?

Generally, yes. Brass instruments do not place a reed or embouchure hole directly against the teeth and lips in the same way, so the interference tends to be less pronounced. Most brass players adapt within days rather than weeks.

Can I time my aligner treatment around performances?

Speak with the Jawology clinical team about your performance schedule. Tray change timing can sometimes be adjusted so you are fully adapted before important events rather than in an adjustment period.
