Do Clear Aligners Affect Your Speech?

The possibility of a lisp or changed speech is one of the concerns that comes up most often when people consider clear aligners. It is a legitimate question, and the honest answer is that most people do experience some speech change at the start of treatment, but it is temporary and usually resolves within a short time.

Do Aligners Change the Way You Speak?

Yes, initially. Clear aligners add a thin layer of plastic over both arches of teeth. This changes the internal space of the mouth and can alter the way air and the tongue interact with the teeth during speech. For most people, the result is a mild lisp or slight change to the clarity of certain sounds, particularly in the first few days of wearing aligners.

The good news is that the brain and tongue adapt remarkably quickly to changes in the oral environment. Most people stop noticing the effect within a few days to two weeks, as their articulation unconsciously adjusts to account for the aligners.

Which Sounds Are Most Affected?

Sounds that require precise tongue-to-tooth contact are most commonly affected. These include sibilant sounds such as the letters s, z, and sh, where air passes through a narrow channel formed by the tongue near the upper front teeth. The additional plastic from the aligner changes the geometry of that channel, which can cause a slight whistling or lisping effect.

Sounds that require the tongue to contact the roof of the mouth directly, such as t, d, n, and l, may also be slightly altered but are typically less pronounced and resolve faster.

How Long Does the Lisp Last?

For most people, the speech change is most noticeable in the first three to five days. By the end of the first week or two, the majority of patients find their speech has returned to normal or very close to it. Some people adapt within hours; others take a few weeks for particularly complex sounds.

Each time you change to a new tray, the shape is slightly different from the previous one, and you may notice a brief, milder adjustment period. This tends to become less noticeable as treatment progresses and you become more accustomed to adapting.

Tips for Adapting Faster

Reading aloud while wearing your aligners is one of the most effective ways to accelerate adaptation. It forces active engagement with the sounds that are affected and helps the tongue find new positions more quickly than passive wear alone.

Talking on the phone, having conversations, and generally just using your voice as much as normal in the first few days also speeds up the process. The more you use your speech, the faster the adaptation.

Avoid removing aligners because of the speech change. This delays adaptation and means you never fully adjust. The only way through is to wear them consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will clear aligners give me a lisp?

Most people experience a mild lisp or speech change in the first few days of wearing aligners. It is temporary. The brain and tongue adapt quickly, and most people find their speech normalises within one to two weeks.

How do I get rid of a lisp from clear aligners?

The most effective approach is to keep wearing your aligners consistently and practise speaking. Reading aloud and having normal conversations accelerates adaptation. Removing aligners to avoid the lisp delays it further.

Does the lisp come back when you change to a new tray?

Some people notice a very brief, mild readjustment period when switching to a new tray. It is usually much shorter than the initial adaptation and becomes less noticeable as treatment progresses.

Are some people more affected by speech changes from aligners than others?

Yes. People who work in roles requiring a lot of speaking, such as presenting, teaching, or broadcasting, tend to notice the change more acutely. Individual anatomy also plays a role. But the adaptive process is the same for everyone and most people reach a comfortable equilibrium quickly.
