How to Wear a Retainer If You Play Sport

If you play sport and wear a retainer, you are navigating two competing priorities: wearing the retainer enough hours to maintain your results, and managing the reality that training sessions, games, and sweaty equipment make that complicated. Here is how to handle both without compromising either.

Contact Sport vs Non-Contact Sport

The calculus is different depending on your sport. For non-contact sports, running, swimming, cycling, tennis, and similar, there is no particular reason to remove a clear retainer during activity. The retainer does not interfere with breathing or performance, and leaving it in adds to your daily wear total, which matters if you are in the early retention phase.

For contact or collision sports, football, rugby, martial arts, basketball, hockey, the situation is different. A retainer is not a mouthguard. It is not designed to absorb impact, it does not protect the teeth from collision forces, and it can break under impact in a way that creates sharp intraoral hazards. For any sport with meaningful impact risk, the retainer comes out and a proper mouthguard goes in.

Retainer vs Mouthguard: Understanding the Difference

A retainer is passive. It holds teeth where they are but cannot absorb or distribute impact force. It is made from relatively thin thermoplastic that is not engineered for collision scenarios.

A mouthguard is designed specifically for impact absorption. It is thicker, covers more of the arch including the gums and biting surfaces, and distributes force to reduce the risk of tooth fracture, jaw injury, and concussion. Custom mouthguards, made from impressions of your current tooth position, offer the best protection and fit most comfortably.

Can You Use Both?

Not simultaneously. And as discussed elsewhere, using a retainer as a mouthguard or a mouthguard as a retainer does not work well. The best approach for athletes who train or play frequently is to factor the sport time into your retainer wear schedule. If you train for two hours in the evening and cannot wear the retainer during that time, wear it the rest of the day and all night to compensate. During the night-only phase of retention, this becomes a non-issue.

Storing Your Retainer Safely During Training

This is where things go wrong for athletes. A retainer left in a gym bag without a case can be lost, crushed, or destroyed. Leaving it in your car during outdoor summer training sessions risks heat warping. The case goes in your bag, the retainer goes in the case the moment it leaves your mouth, and the case stays somewhere accessible and not exposed to extreme heat.

Having a spare retainer is more valuable for active people than for those with quieter lifestyles. If you train regularly, carry both retainers. Lose one and you still have the other while you organise a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swim with my retainer in?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. Pool chemicals can degrade the plastic over time, and there is a genuine risk of losing it in the water. Non-contact pool swimming is low risk for your teeth specifically, so removing the retainer for swim sessions is reasonable.

My sport requires a mouthguard. Can I wear a retainer at all?

Yes, outside of training and games. If you are doing two-hour evening sessions and wearing a mouthguard during that time, you have 22 hours of the rest of the day and sleep to wear the retainer. Plan your wear around your training schedule.

Can a custom mouthguard be made to also function as a retainer?

Combination devices exist, but they represent a compromise on both functions. For mild retainer needs combined with low-level contact sport, it may be adequate. Discuss with your orthodontist and the mouthguard provider together.

What do I do if I lose my retainer at a sports venue?

Check the venue's lost property. If it is gone, order a replacement immediately using an at-home impression service. Do not wait weeks while your teeth shift.
