Travelling With a Retainer: What to Pack and What to Never Do

Travel is one of the most common reasons people break their retainer routine. You pack in a rush, the routine changes completely, and before long you have gone two weeks without wearing it. The Packing Checklist

At minimum: your retainer, its case, a travel-sized soft toothbrush for cleaning it, and a small bottle of retainer cleaning solution or cleaning tablets. If you are travelling for more than a week, consider whether bringing a spare retainer is worth the peace of mind, particularly if you are going somewhere remote where getting a replacement quickly would be difficult.

Keep the retainer cleaning kit with your toothbrush and toothpaste rather than packed separately. Attaching it to an existing routine item means it travels with you wherever the bathroom kit goes and is not accidentally left behind.

Carry-On vs Checked Luggage

Your retainer goes in your carry-on, always. The baggage hold of a commercial aircraft can reach significant temperature extremes, including cold temperatures that could affect the material, and your bag will not be accessible if you want to wear the retainer during a long flight. Carry-on also removes the loss risk inherent in checked baggage.

On long international flights, wearing your retainer during the flight is worthwhile if you are in the early retention phase. Cabin air is extremely dry, and some people notice their mouth feels different after long flights. The retainer keeps teeth in position regardless.

Heat and Climate Risks

Hot destinations are the biggest retainer hazard. A retainer left in a hire car in Queensland summer, sitting on a windowsill in a tropical hotel room, or tucked into a bag that has been in direct sun can warp beyond use. Keep the case in the shade and never leave it in a car during warm weather.

Conversely, very cold environments are not a significant concern for clear plastic retainers. The issue is almost always excessive heat, not cold.

If Something Goes Wrong on the Road

Lost your retainer halfway through a trip? If you have a spare, great. If not, the short-term options are limited but the damage control is straightforward: minimise the time without a retainer by having a replacement organised to arrive as soon as you are home.
